Q: We are thinking of making a trip to Durango for the fourth of July. What are the fireworks laws there? Are firecrackers, bottle rockets, etc. allowed and sold in or outside Durango?
Thanks.
A: All types of fireworks are ILLEGAL in La Plata County. Durango has a great 4th of July fireworks display from Greenmont Cemetary which can be seen from anywhere in downtown Durango.
We recorded last year's display. You can see it by clicking here

Q: I would like to travel the San Juan Skyway from Durango to Silverton to Ouray to Teluride to Dolores to Cortez to Durango. My wife’s doctors have advised her to avoid altitudes above 8000 feet because she has problems with her blood pressure. Maps show the altitudes of several mountain pases along the route to be 10,000 feet or so.
Does that mean that the highway itself reaches those altitudes? Or does that mean that only the surrounding mountain peaks are at those altitudes? If the highway reaches those altitudes, is this only for a relative short distance, requiring only short time of exposure to altitudes higher than 8000 feet?
A: A good part of the time you are above 8,000 feet. The surrounding mountains are more than 12,000 feet a lot of the time. From the time you reach the area around Durango Mountain Resort through Ouray you will find yourself above 8,000 feet.

Q: We're coming to Durango the first part of June for a family reunion and would like to make a week-long vacation of it. Any suggestions of what to do/see in the area? We will be coming up from Page, AZ, stopping in Durango, and then continuing home to Ogden, UT.
Thanks!
A: This is a great question. There are several activities not to miss during a weeks stay in Durango. They include:
Ride The Durango & Silverton Train. Don't miss this experience.
Visit Mesa Verde National Park. It's one of the great wonders of the world.
Take a raft trip. During the month of June the waters are usually at their highest point. Rafting is a great family adventure.
Enjoy downtown Durango. The area has a lot to offer with shopping and dining.
Enjoy the Diamond Circle Melodrama at the Historic Strater Hotel.
If you have the strength and endurance, ride a mountain bike in the San Juan Mountains. The views are breathtaking.

Q: We'll be in CO on vacation on July 4th. Will Durango have fireworks ?
A: Yes, Durango has a great fireworks show from the cemetary acrros from downtown Durango. The best viewing spot in our opinion is in the parking lots between 7th and 8th and Camino Del Rio and Main Ave. The firworks start at dusk and usually last around 30 minutes. You can see a video from last years fireworks by clicking here Please note: You will need Real Player in order to see the video

Q: Is it true that the road up the mountain to the ski area, Purgatory, is
so snow covered that only a 4-wheel drive is allowed?
A: Although you may need snow tires or 4wd a lot of the time, the road rarely requires the use of chains between Durango and Purgatory unless you don't have snow tires or 4wd. Trucks on the other hand will have to put chains on but this is usually North of the ski area.

Q: I'm interested in mountain biking in Durango, I have read that this a premier location for this sport, however, I'm concerned about high altitude sickness. On your home page you indicate that Durango is at an elevation of 6,500 feet, which is below the usual 8000 feet associated with high altitude sickness, none the less I was wondering if high altitude sickness is a common complaint among those visiting and participating in sports.
A: High Altitude Sickness is an issue many people worry about when coming to Colorado. We can't give any medical advice but I know when I moved here, I was tired a lot of the time. My best advice for people who are concerned about it, is to see your physician before makiing the trip.

My brother in Arizona has a water shortage concern. You get the idea. With interest in moving to the Durango area what is yours? Man made and natural. pj Thank you for your time.
A: As for natural disasters, Durango can get a lot of Monsoonal moisture during the summer and fall months. A lot of the area is in flood zones.
Durango can be prone to wildfires as well. The forest service does a great job trying to keep the potential under control with controlled burns.

Q: What will be the road condition during the thanksgiving weekend to drive from houston to durango?
A: If I could predict the weather, I would be rich. But since I can't I will say that the weather should be ok around thanksgiving as we don't usually start to get decent snowfall until mid December. The roads between Albuquerque and Durango are pretty much flat as you don't start climbing until you are north of Durango on the way to Purgatory. You can always find the weather out for Durango by going to the weather channel.

Q: Is there a place where we can board dogs while we take the train trip? Thanks.
A: We called the train and they and they told us of two companies they recommend:
Willowtree Kennels which is about 5 miles north of Durango near Trimble Hot Springs. They charge $20 per day per dog or cat. You must have proof of all shots in order to board your animal with them. You can reach them by calling 970-259-0018. They recommend a minimum of two days notice but we would recommend calling before you leave on your trip. Willowtree only boards animals for the 8:15 or 9:00 a.m. train
The other location is Puppy Love Kennels which is located about 8 miles east of Durango. You can reach them at 970-259-3043 Although Puppy Love only charges $10 per day they have fees for having someone meet you before they open or after they close. The extra fees range from $5-15.

A: Good Question. The Safest bet is usually the last week of September through the first week of October. However, we've had an extremely dry summer (eventhough we're getting rain now). The dry summers can lead to bad fall colors. If we find any reports on the fall color change, we'll post them here. If anyone else sees these reports please send us an email and we'll post the link.
